HEA Winter School 2026 Talk
Last month, I had the privilege of speaking at the HEA Winter School 2026 in Livingstone—a gathering of academics focused on “Strengthening Higher Education Curriculum Quality through Quality Assurance in the Era of Digital Transformation, and Artificial Intelligence.”
The timing was perfect. By the time I took the stage (July 15-17), many speakers had already covered the essentials: how to use AI tools like ChatGPT, the magic (and risks) of prompt engineering, and reassurances that AI isn’t out to replace higher education. But while everyone was talking about AI, I wanted to focus on something more practical: how to actually use AI when redesigning your curriculum.
Moving Beyond the Hype
The question I kept coming back to was simple: now that we know AI exists and can be useful, how do we really integrate it into our programmes? It’s not enough to know the technology works—academics needed concrete, actionable steps.
So my talk centered on a toolkit for program design and review that takes the AI-age seriously. The goal? To help educators think through how their learning outcomes, assessments, and teaching strategies need to evolve as AI becomes an everyday tool for students.
